‘The certainty is that Lawrence Casserley can be more innovative and creative than many of the ringleaders of the young generation of laptoppers’ (Rui Eduardo Paes)

Since the 1960s Lawrence Casserley has been at the forefront of live processing sound – since the 1990s he developed a digital Signal Processing Instrument specifically for improvised music, which has been the basis of his work ever since. He is renowned for his work with the Evan Parker Electro-acoustic Ensemble and collaborations with many leading improvisers, including Philipp Wachsmann, Gianni Mimmo, Viv Corringham, Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg, Jeffrey Morgan, Adam Linson, Paul Rutherford and Barry Guy. For his 75th birthday he is celebrating a few of those collaborations, and initiating some new ones. This programme presents the enticing combination of an innovative musicans’ collective and a dynamic trio combining instrumental and electronic sound. Oxford Improvisers are a highly accomplished group of musicians based around the Oxford area. Their performances are noted for intense listening and imaginative interaction. Lawrence has been a member of OI for several years and is very proud to present this exceptional group in London as part of his birthday celebrations. Dominic Lash is a Bristol based double bassist and was formerly a central figure in the musicians’ collective Oxford Improvisers. Important long-term musical collaborators include Angharad Davies, Bruno Guastalla, Alexander Hawkins, Tim Hill, Steve Noble, Samantha Rebello, Pat Thomas, Philipp Wachsmann and Alex Ward. Pat Thomas has performed with a wide variety of artists including Phil Minton, Roger Turner, Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley, Steve Beresford and and Carlos Zingaro. Both have been members of OI, and first performed in trio with Lawrence at an OI event. The trio have since performed together at Cafe OTO and other places, and their first record release is in preparation.
