IKLECTIK x Bezirk present a night of multidimensional, electronic music. From the audio/visual media misuse of London duo Sculpture, to BAG X BEHRENS poetics of circuits and voice, and JC Leisure’s reanimation of the rave archive. These artists all twist ideas of sampling, analogue vs digital and machine vs human autonomy in their vibrant sonics.

The event will be enlivened by Beachers (aka Daryl Worthington) DJ sets!

SCULPTURE

Audiovisual duo, Sculpture, aka musician Dan Hayhurst & visual artist/animator Reuben Sutherland, tour temporary states of digital/physical recomposition, device misuse, comic strips, video art & multisensory perception.

Utilizing a chaotic library of zoetropic prints, Sutherland’s visual turntablism combines pre-cinema imaging with cutting-edge digital techniques in hallucinatory loops and cut ups. There’s a clear connection with Hayhurst’s volatile electronic music forms, free associations pursuing an obscure logic.

Sculpture have released audible and visible media on Daniel Lopatin/0PN’s Software label, patten’s Kaleidoscope, Dekorder, Psyché Tropes, Ana Ott and Digitalis plus the duo’s own imprints Plastic Infinite & Tapebox.

The duo’s recent work includes the graphic novel/tape, Nearest Neighbour, a 26 locked groove animated 5″, Projected Music, and short film, Fanfic Telepresence.

JC LEISURE

The music of JC Leisure is built from the artist’s archive of mixtapes from circa 1992, a distillation of the counterculture of rave, free parties and pirate radio broadcasts serving as launch pad for everything from hybrid cassette DJ sets to beautiful generative ecosystems.

2020 album ‘Mutations For’, on Warm Winters Ltd, set out to give the archive a higher form of autonomy, the tapes sampled live and fed through synthesizers, software patches and samplers to becoming composers of their own melodies and rhythms. The tapes are never sampled directly, instead used as signals to animate new sonics to life. JC Leisure told The Wire Magazine in 2020: “When I’m sending these cassette tapes to synthesizers and samplers, I don’t really know what’s going to happen… It’s out of my control, it totally removes any sense of ego.”

Liverpool based JC Leisure curated the Pale Master label, is a member of generative music project Raft of Trash, produces the ongoing Kind Worlds radio broadcast series on Melodic Distraction, oversees the House of Saturn FM online archive of pirate radio broadcasts and the House of Saturn hybrid net-label and art platform.

BAG X BEHRENS

BAG X BEHRENS is the thrilling collaboration between London-based poetry/electronics duo BAG (aka Dan Allison & Jody DeSchutter) and visual and sound artist Charlie Behrens.

Their debut release, Redshifted/Brood Ten, is a work of speculative exploration, with vibrant sonics and vivid poetry weaving into and around each other. DeSchutter treats words and syllables as malleable matter, haptic objects to be stretched out, twisted and molded. Allison and Behren’s electronics, taking in dub deep negative space, pristine sound design and ghostly frequencies add not so much a backing track as a dialogic component. Pronunciation weaves into beats, language harmonises with pure music, to create an outline of the slippery worlds that can’t be pinned down by either sound or words. “We want that constellation of elsewhere,” says DeSchutter on Redshifted. It serves as fitting statement of intent for the abstract modes of perception BAG X BEHRENS chart.

BAG released their debut album, Mapping Azure, on Bloxham Tapes in 2020, and it was reissued on CD by Wormhole World earlier this year. Taking in reconfigured field recordings, synths, vocals, homemade instruments and loops to scaffold or entomb DeSchutter’s Dada-esque words, and allow the listener to co-navigate the landscape.

Charlie Behrens is a London based visual and sound artist. His work fuses modular synthesis with field recordings and broken beats, creating a vivid, ever updating sonic psychogeography of a parallel universe.

BAG X BEHRENS will release their debut double a-side on 14 July, with an album later this year. This marks their debut live performance.
