I K L E C T I K + Liz Helman present IMAGINARY PLACES; an evening of ambient sound, [DJ set], field recordings + electronics bringing together 4 unique artists, Kate Carr, Liz Helman, Lucie Stepankova + David Toop. The event will explore the intersections of place, imaginary + real. What might an imaginary place be like; what would it sound like? The night loosely takes as its inspiration, the book, Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, its title as intriguing as it is evocative.

Liz Helman is a London based multi-disciplinary artist, working in time-based media. With an interest in ambient music and sound art as a form of expression, her work, both visual and sonic, responds to place and environment. Sensitive to how these energies make her feel, she is interested in the subliminal and sonic exploration of these experiences. By walking the streets, she begins her process with field recordings, making immersive, mesmerising drone based compositions that explore layers of sound and texture. Working organically, she follows the thread of the sound to its ultimate destination, thinking of it as sonic alchemy.

Kate Carr

Kate Carr is a field recordist whose practice is centred on investigating the relationship between the soundscapes we collectively create and how we experience our shared public spaces. She works across composition, performance and installation. Everything from vibrations caused by cars and footfalls, to overheard murmurs, public speeches, music in public space, and the roar of distant sporting events has found its way into her compositions, and live performances. Inspired by the layers, minglings and silences in our collective soundscapes, Carr’s works turn to sound for clues as to how we negotiate living together.
