When I listen with headphones, I enter a space of contradictions. In some sense, I feel transported, as if in a cocoon that takes me to an imagined or even virtual place. But, simultaneously, the physical presence of my body is amplified: I can hear the previously inaudible nuances of my breathing and heartbeat. These intimacies of myself are revealed to me, whilst I gain a more detailed understanding of what I put into the world.
INTRA— is an evening that explores these particularities of headphone listening.

DOORS — 7pm

Joseph Kohlmaier — A Headphone Soliloquy — 7:30pm
Joseph Kohlmaier will open the event with a post-human headphone epistemology, after the audible past – speaking of oscillating coils in the social, languaging, ventriloquist, imperial headphone; of the homeopathic headphone-apparatus for the labour of listening; a headphone ecology of networked headphones; of headphones and third-order coupling, the enclosure of listening and the accumulation of sound, the affordance of the headphone simulacrum: and imagine a disappearing network of headphones, creeping like microplastics.

Ed Cooper — INTRA— // …TO TURN YOURSELF INSIDE OUT… — 8:30pm
Ed Cooper’s work comprises three parts. INTRA—[solo] is a piece to be listened to through headphones privately: this will be sent to attendees ahead of the evening event. INTRA—[accomp] similarly plays on the aesthetics of headphone listening, but is intended to be listened to around others. The listening body is destabilised within itself: a body that is intermingled both to itself and others is made palpable. The evening will conclude with …TO TURN YOURSELF INSIDE OUT…, a four movement suite for both headphones and Amoenus’ 3D sound system housed at IKLECTIK. As such, these works are perceivable only as fragmented and incomplete.

Please note, attendees must bring their own pair of headphones and a listening device, such as a mobile phone, tablet etc.
INTRA— is the culmination of a two-month research residency between Ed Cooper, IKLECTIK, and Amoenus, made possible by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, through the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities.

Ed Cooper

I am a composer, artist, and researcher based in Leeds, UK. Encompassing Deep Listening techniques, considerations of time, and the instabilities of musical bodies, my practice centres around aural liminalities. In particular, I’m interested in attempting to sustain these ephemeral ‘in-betweens’, perhaps perpetually, in the (aural) attention of both listeners and performers. As such, my work is often very quiet, fragmentary, and starts and ends are immaterial.
