Tickets: £30 Only Workshop / £35 Workshop + All Dayer Entry

Max 20 participants.

As part of Hackoustic All Dayer, we are please to host the DIY workshop Light Speakers! Build a speaker to transmit sound via light with Frazer Merrik.

Experiment with using LEDs as speakers, and discover how you can modulate power with audio to send sound via light. In this workshop you will build a small LED speaker and solar panel microphone to make your own light-based audio transmitter and receiver.

We’ll begin by building the solar panel microphone and exploring physics of light and sound, uncovering the hidden electromagnetic soundscape of visible and infrared light sources all around us. This will be a lo-fi DIY version of the official Photon Smasher microphone, the microphone for listening to light. Next we’ll construct the LED speaker, experimenting with how you can use audio to modulate the power to an LED and discovering how this is then amplified by the microphone.

All materials are provided and participants will be able to take their construction home. An additional ticket tier is available for those who wish to buy an official Photon Smasher microphone, at a reduced rate.

This workshop is delivered by Frazer Merrick and Simon Keep of CLIP, an award winning social enterprise support people of all ages to explore music and get curious with sound in supportive and encouraging environments, ensuring self-perceived ability is never a barrier to entry.
