About BIS:

Bergen ImproStorband is an open collective of musicians and artists in Bergen with an interest in experimenting with and exploring improvisation in a large group setting. Our work is project based and we realize around 5-10 projects a year. We are of today around 130 artists on our mailinglist, an average of 10-15 people participate in each project. BIS celebrates 10 years running this fall, founding member Ole Andre Farstad spent two years in London studying at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and during that time saw LIO in concert several times, this inspired him to start something similar back in Bergen, he allied with colleague John Hegre and started BIS. And here we are, 10 years after, the circle is closing, in a way. We are so much looking forward to playing with our colleagues in LIO in London after having Caroline and Steve from LIO visiting and leading BIS in January 2020, just before Covid19 hit the world.

“The kind of intensity, excitement, and invention that this ensemble creates via spontaneous means is unique in New Music circles.”
Art Lange, Fanfare

In 1997, Evan Parker, Ian Smith and Steve Beresford put together a 24-piece orchestra to tour the UK for the Contemporary Music Network, under the baton of Butch Morris. Butch, sadly no longer with us, was a New York-based African-American cornet player, arranger and exponent of the improvised conducting technique known as ‘conduction’.

About a year after that, we put together the London Improvisers Orchestra to carry that process on. All members of the orchestra were encouraged to conduct pieces. Since our first gig, at the Red Rose in Finsbury Park, we have played pretty well every month at various venues.
