Leon Trimble

Leon Trimble is an audio-visual artist who builds systems for performance, often a hybrid of analogue and digital, often immersive, and more frequently conceptual in nature. He has bounced the sounds off his gravity synth off the surface of the moon from inside abbey road studios; Toured Europe and the UK with tech-heavy theatre projects; designed his own AI powered synths. His most recent achievements are the (near) completion of a masters in Experimental Performance at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and live re-scores of James T Hong’s film work at Ikon gallery. His modular night BMO has recently launched at Centrala, Birmingham.

Frae-Frae: Daughter of Drexciya

LaFrae Sci a.k.a Frae-Frae: Daughter of Drexciya is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, educator, composer, and electro acoustic adventurer. Bedrock to her artistry is the roots and the fruits of the blues from spirituals to afro diasporic futuristic soundscapes that explore time travel, prayer, meditation, and the African American ecstatic tradition. As a composer, she writes for film, theater, and large and extended jazz and classical orchestras, and her creative range spans immersive and ambisonic music, blues, various ethnomusicological traditions, rock, pop, hip-hop, and her own brand of subaquatic deconstructed techno soul. To date, she has shared her intentional creativity in 38 countries. LaFrae is also the Executive Director/Dir of Artistic Programming at Willie Mae Future Sounds named after Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton. W.M.F.S. is a STEAM based, year-round empowerment through music program that includes spiritual activism, Afro Diasporic futurism, critical thinking, and leadership, including music technology through the lens of the blues tradition for girls and gender non-conforming youth in New York City.

The Psychedelically Modulated Spermaceti Organ w/Steve Davis (Psychedelic Modular) & Steve O’Malley

Steve Davis was the most successful professional snooker player during the 1980’s and won 6 world championships. After retiring in 2016 from the sport, he focused on his other lifelong passion, music. Co-presenting radio shows on PhoenixFM and NTS Radio with Kavus Torabi, saw him becoming ever more interested in the electronic genre. In 2018, after discovering the Modular Synthesizer a few years earlier, he joined forces with Kavus and Michael York to form The Utopia Strong. While attending the ever-expanding modular synth events around the country, he has teamed up with Steve O’Malley (a regular performer at Control Voltage in Southend) to embrace the challenge of improvised electronic music.

Steve O’Malley started making kitchen table top noise in 2018 with a Stylophone Gen-X1, a homemade APC and a delay pedal. Immediately it was clear that more equipment was required. After posting a couple of videos on FB local musicians started asking him to open their gigs so he named himself THE SPERMACETI ORGAN. This was a haphazard undertaking but people seemed to like it. Shortly after this he was offered a slot at the Control Voltage night in Southend. In 2019 he bumped into Steve Davis (Psychedelic Modular, The Utopia Strong) at Supernormal Festival and got chatting about synths. They got together for a couple of ‘synth offs’ and were asked to play a Control Voltage night in Colchester. They decided to name themselves “The Psychedelically Modulated Spermaceti Organ” Steve is also in a duo with Emma Reed (Pettaluck, Lost Harbours, Rock Garden Of Chandigarh) called Sunfish Starfish (album out on Anticipating Nowhere at the end of Feb). Steve has never been in Sunn O))).

John Biddulph: HandMadeSound

John has been exploring electronic sound for nearly 50 years. His first encounter was with an early valve version of a Watkins Electronic Music Copicat, a violin with a guitar pick up and an effects pedal. Later, whilst at music college he was able to access synthesisers the size of old telephone switchboards and reel to reel tape recorders with 10-yard tape loops around jam jars. Following many years of composing, performing, and recording as a jazz saxophonist, a clarinettist in various orchestras, John now spends much of his time with modular synthesisers. He has composed music for film, radiophonic broadcasts, and theatre productions and was commissioned to produce the ‘Terra Nova’ suite celebrating the centenary of Scott’s expedition and first performed at The Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge. He plays a wide range of styles from keyboard-based synthesiser music to purely modular forms and ‘found sounds’ through field recordings. He is currently Composer/Musician-in-Residence for Birmingham Modular Organisation. Recent releases include, in 2020, ‘Structures’, in 2021 ‘Perambulations 1’ and in 2022, ‘Witch Tones’ all available at handmadesound.bandcamp.com and on CD.
