Maximum 12 participants (we will work outdoors and in a big space indoors.)

Join artist and filmmaker Karel Doing for a special workshop on phytography, an artistic technique he invented that makes it possible to render detailed chemical traces of plants directly on photographic emulsion. The process takes place in full daylight and makes use of biodegradable chemistry.

During the workshop the artist will explain his technique, placing it in a historical lineage of experimental photography and film while also connecting it to ecological awareness.

After this introduction, a hands-on demonstration is provided.

• Introduction about direct animation, eco-developers, and the phytogram
• Exploration of the local ecosystem
• Using local plants to make images directly on photographic paper
• Using local plants to make images directly on film (collaborative work process)
• Projection and discussion

Programme:

• introduction with slides (history, technical, context)
• gathering plants
• demonstration
• work on paper
• work on motion picture film, both individual and collective
• discussion and projection

Materials and tools: – included –

– 16mm motion picture film
– photographic paper
– chemistry
– 16mm projectors and splicer

Karel Doing is an independent artist, filmmaker, and researcher currently based in Oxford, UK. “Phytography” is a method Doing developed during research focused on ecology and media, a project that is still ongoing. Phytography enables interaction between the phytochemical properties of plants and photochemical emulsion.Doing’s work has been shown worldwide in micro-cinemas, on stage, and in galleries. He regularly gives workshops in analog film practice and is currently a lecturer in contextual studies at Ravensbourne University London. In many of his works, the rhythmical, painterly, and performative qualities of the analog film medium are foregrounded.
