For just over 10 years, Blue Tapes has curated a numbered series of releases emphasising different aspects of minimal music – from grime to gugak, American primitivism to Japanese ambient – presented with appropriately minimal and often abstract cyanotype artwork.

During this period, the label has birthed critically acclaimed releases from Katie Gately, Trupa Trupa, Jute Gyte, Tashi Dorji and many more.

To celebrate this decade of beautiful objects and strange sounds we present an evening of Blue Tapes music and art.

Ashtray Navigations

“We were always too rock for the art crowd and too artsy for the rock & roll crowd,” Phil Todd of kosmische music institution Ashtray Navigations explained to The Quietus. “I’ve always been a big fan of playfulness. I take great pleasure in the unexpected and illogical aspects of recording music.” The music of ‘Ash Nav’, as the project is known to its devoted admirers, has traversed the fields of drone, noise, krautrock, lo-fi, psychedelia and ambient across 180 or so releases. But as Phil indicates, one of the determining characteristics of this project is a sharply-honed sense of playfulness.

The MIDI piano sketches of Suren Seneviratne – perhaps more familiar to some as outsider house don My Panda Shall Fly – are restless, glitchy and endearingly playful. Sometimes the notes popping across your ears lure you into a false sense of security; you can feel yourself sinking into this delicate rain of sounds only to be unsettled by a jarring frequency, an unheimlich interval. It’s like some other intelligence is at play in this music, hiding between the notes, dragging the rug out from under you just when you start getting cosy.

Soft-Bodied Humans

The ‘eclectic beats & bass’ project of Blue Tapes founder David McNamee has seen him collaborate with a diverse range of MCs and singers including Anna Homler, Swordman Kitala and Fire-Toolz. Neck-snapping beats and pulverising, searching drones create a musical space that sometimes verges on a sort of industrial doom-gqom. In this universe, nothing moves quite like it’s supposed to.
