Automatonism Workshop_2

Automatonism Workshop & Midsummer Modular Meet
Sat 22 July 10AM-2PM | £20 – BUY TICKETS / Facebook Event Link

Did you ever wonder about the modular synthesis philosophy? Did you feel reluctant when it is time to acquire expensive hardware modular synthesizers? The modular philosophy brings many advantages with respect to more conventional software or hardware tools based on sequences, scores, etc. Fortunately, the modular philosophy is no longer limited to expensive pieces of hardware. In this workshop, we will explore the building block of modular synthesis using Automatonism: A free library of objects and user interfaces for Pure-Data that mimic the basic modules of modular synthesis (oscillators, filters, envelopes, VCA, VCF). By marked contrast with Pure-Data or MaxMSP programming, Automatonism introduces simple blocks with simple interface and connectivity.

The modular philosophy brings a generative twist the conceptual framework of sound arts and electronic music while focusing on processes and systems to generate rhythms, variations, patterns, or melody. In this workshop, we will explore the modular synthesis grammar. Depending on interests, the workshop may cover technical, artistic and critical topics. The workshop will focus on the conceptual and practical side. The workshop is open to absolute beginners and intermediate users. Advanced users are also welcome to nourish the group discussion and collective explorations. Participants can optionally bring a laptop with Pure-Data to actually explore the tools. Exact topics will be collectively defined on site.

Chaired by Philippe-Aubert Gauthier, a digital artist and researcher working at the intersections of arts, sciences and technology.
