BUTOH RESIDENCY offers three days of live performances, films and a workshop that see Japanese and European musicians, dancers and artists working together to advance the global recognition of Butoh – both as a uniquely Japanese art form and as a vibrant international platform for communicating in or beyond all languages. Collaborating artists include pianist and vocalist Aya Ogawa and dancer Mushimaru Fujieda from Japan; Butoh-Techno from Poland, French electronic musician Pascal Savy and, on film, performances by the late Sapporo based dancer Yoko Muronoi.
WORKSHOP
Mushimaru Fujieda Workshop on “Natural Physical Poetry” accompanied by Aya Ogawa
- Introduction and explanation on “Controlling body and mind through the breath”
- Simple preparatory exercises
- Breath-Walking
(a) Basic Form, walking with the breath
(b) Variation, Imagine an energy force suddenly running through the body as you walk
Variation, Imagine an energy force pulling parts of the body from outside as you walk
(d) Encounters, Contact improvisation
- Vocalisation
Using the voice as an extension of the breath
- Facial Expression
Using both facial and body expression to do a short, improvised dance
- Exercises to link the breath to the movements of the body
- Optional Exercises
Performing a short programme using elements of nature (wind, earth, trees, etc) as the theme – replicating forms and movements from traditional Japanese arts (Noh, Kabuki, etc)
-creating a choreographed programme involving the whole group
The workshop will conclude with a 10 minute improvised performance given by each participant
