IKLECTIK presents,

Experimental Digital DJing Workshop

Saturday 27 May 2023 | 10am – 1pm

Tickets: £40 (advance booking required) https://link.dice.fm/L0bbb8eae1a9

All abilities welcome. Suitable for those with an interest in experimental music who want to learn about DJ technology, or DJs who wish to expand their practice.

Explore audio materials, techniques and structure! Working with field recordings made on your phone, we will see how these and other audio materials can be used for creative DJing and sound manipulation. You will learn techniques in a free digital DJ app and there will be hardware DJ controllers setup to get your hands on.

We will also explore approaches for spatialising DJ performances on a multi-channel sound system, ‘Worldizing’ techniques, DJing as a Deep Listening practice, and there will be an opportunity for group improvisation.

As part of a PhD at the University of Birmingham inspired by experimental turntablism and his own expansive career as a DJ and live performer, Jake Williams has been developing DJ workshops as an integral part of his creative practice. The workshops explore these techniques and technologies as a uniquely immediate and tactile way to explore experimental sound and music.

Jake Williams

Jake cut his teeth playing live electronics with the Warp-signed avant-jazz band Red Snapper, as well as creating music and sound design for major TV shows and producing the occasional well-received techno record. He now works as a composer, improvisor, researcher, and educator with a particular interest in radical creative applications of digital DJ technology. He has performed extensively in the UK and abroad, both solo and as part of collaborative music, audio-visual, and live art projects. He is currently the resident DJ at London queer performance art night Runt of the Litter.
