Exploratoria – Christian Wolff & Eddie Prévost 26th September


There are lots of cultural wars out there: the Ancients against the Moderns (literature), Classical v. Romantic (painting), and, in music, improvisation contra composition. A peace march rather than a military one is timely. Christian Wolff, New York School composer alongside Cage and Feldman, says “notation is by definition incomplete”, wants music to be transformative, eliding distinctions between performer, composer, listener. Eddie Prévost, improvising percussionist, has in his discography his 1969 score Silver Pyramid, and has recorded Wolff’s Trio II (with John Tilbury and its composer on piano). This first duo encounter (they’ve both played in AMM) looks unmissable…
