John Butcher

John Butcher is well known as a saxophonist who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of time and place. His music ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked works and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics. Since the early 80s he has collaborated with hundreds of artists – including Eddie Prévost, Akio Suzuki, Steve Beresford, Okkyung Lee, Derek Bailey, Christian Marclay and Rhodri Davies. He also values occasional encounters, ranging from the WDR Sinfonieorchester to duos with Keiji Haino, David Toop, Joe McPhee and Sophie Agnel. Recent compositions include “Tarab Cuts” (shortlisted for a British Composer’s Award) and “the HCMF commission “Fluid Fixations” for 14 players.
