‘Matt Gough & Phil Merriman are a trumpet and piano duo that weave between Jazz, Improvised and Classical repertoire.
They first met in their late teens when they played in the Merton Youth Jazz Orchestra. Phil, as well as playing piano in the rhythm section, was also a fine trumpet player and would on occasion join Matt in the trumpet section providing the perfect opportunity for the beginnings of a strong musical working relationship and great friendship.
After finishing school Matt studied on the Jazz course at the Birmingham Conservatoire and Phil studied Music at York University. They stayed in touch and would frequently work together but it was upon finishing at university and returning to live and work in London that Matt & Phil started playing a lot as a duo.
Exploring their love of Jazz, Classical and Improvised music in standard repertoire as well as their own original compositions the pair have been playing as a duo now for 4 years and are very excited to be performing their work together.’
