‘Two masks instead of one II ‘ is a performance and installation art work in collaboration with Yan Gi Cheng andTrami Nguyen. It is a new contemplation on the notion of a collective narcissism fervent in contemporarysociety. The subjectivity of oneself has become a multiplicity of perceptions, with the internet and socialmedia as a platform for formulating alter egos and distorted impressions of our identities. This work stagesan event as a subtraction and formalisation to certain given rules of the modern gaze. The installationbecomes an arena for disrupting all classical forms of narrative. And the distorted objectification issimultaneously enveloped and separate from the real, therefore the silence of a new order of things comesinto being. An immersive sound installation is reverberated from under the black boxes and the objects leftare traces of performative actions which took place. A pair of cylindrical mirrors each reflecting eachreflecting their true faces. Referencing the art from the European Medieval period, the anamorphic imagewas used to reveal hidden cryptic messages. The mask has significant meaning in African culture, forexample in the Goli dance animals of the wilderness, represented by masks, enter the world of humankindin pairs. This dance is an expression of Baule’s world view, which is rooted in dualism: it demonstrates theopposition as well as the union of the genders, of the human world and the wilderness
