Gina Birch

As one-half of the Raincoats’ core duo since 1977, Gina Birch is a punk icon with a pop sensibility, an art-schooled adventurer who has painted, filmed, and performed by her own rules for over 45 years—using her visual art to tell stories, charging raw recordings with concepts. She won’t hang back and never stopped being challenging. Her first solo album recently released, I Play My Bass Loud, evokes her singular approach to her instrument as well as an ethos. This album is a birthday card for the next generation of all women.

Anat Ben-David

Dr Anat Ben-David explores the freedom of live improvisation combined with traditional musical composition, her collaborative and solo work founded in experimental theatre methodology. With six solo albums Anat defy the semantics of the word ‘album’, reconfiguring the word to take on a truly interdisciplinary meaning. Her background in the school of Visual Theatre, and as a member of electro–punk band Chicks On Speed, has led to projects such as Kairos OperaArt (2017) where live electronic processing meets classical instrumentation in a fusion of musical genres. In her doctoral research Oscillation and Disturbance in the OpeRaArt (Kingston University, 2015) Ben David coined the term ‘OpeRaArt’ to explain her method of working.

Kamura Obscura

Atsuko Kamura, aka Kamura Obscura, is a Japanese agit-femme vocalist, bassist and electronic experimentalist. She is a former member of the seminal avant-garde ensemble Frank Chickens in UK, and a founder member of Mizutama Shobodan (Polka Dot Fire Brigade), the first Japanese all-feminist punk band in the 80s. Looped electronics, vocal improvisations through improbable effects, surreal Japanese chanson, the occasional roaring punk wailing…and avant-garde pop. There are all in her anti-genre music. Her latest solo album, 4AM Diary is described as “a nightclub cabaret in occupied territory, inscrutable subversion discombobulating kirsch-quaffing commissars.” By Stewart Lee, Idler May June 2022
